Chakra Series: Root Chakra

We get energy from several different types of vibrations–including color–that are used in various parts of the body. Our major energy centers are connected to major organs that govern other body parts. Each of these main energy centers is referred to as a chakra. Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means wheel. A chakra is a wheel-like spinning vortex that whirls in a circular motion forming a vacuum in the center of our spiritual being that balances us.
It is said that our body contains hundreds of chakras that are the key to the operation of our being. There are seven main chakras which are the energy centers in our body. These “spinning wheels” draw-in information through colors, stones, candles or even someone else’s aura. Through our chakras we perceive the health of our environment, including the people in our lives.
The seven main chakra centers are aligned along the spine. If there are disturbances on any level, this shows in the chakra’s vitality level. Also each of the seven main chakras is their own intelligence center. This means that each chakra is not only associated with our physical health but also controls aspects connected to our emotional, mental and belief system.
Blocked energy in one of the Chakras can cause illness so it's important to understand what each Chakra represents and what we can do to keep this energy flowing freely.
We’ll start with the 1st Chakra, the Root Chakra. This chakra represents our foundation and is all about feeling grounded and secure. The root chakra is at the base of spine in tailbone area. To help balance chakras on an intellectual, emotional, physical or even spiritual level, we need to bring the chakra in tune with the universal energy balance. We can do this through the use of the color, candles, and stones mentioned earlier. Choose the one that resonates for you.
The primary color that coincides with the root chakra is red. For example, red candles represent health, courage, energy, life, passion, fertility, physical strength. They are invigorating and increase magnetism which aids grounding, and allows them to be used in defensive magic. Rose quartz, garnets, and rubies will also help you bring your root chakra into balance. Ruby is associated with Mars and the Sun, love and healing, and, of course, the root chakra.
To a somewhat lesser degree, black is also associated with the root chakra, and there are several black stones such as hematite, obsidian, and tourmaline that are associated with grounding and security that can also help you bring your chakra back into balance, and, of course, black candles are also associated with protection, destroying evil or negativity, binding, and repelling and healing.
